He was a farmer, and a polygamist, having two wives: Eleanor Martin, and Sarah Beriah Fisk. He helped build the L.D.S. Temple in Nauvoo, Illinois, and he helped found Salt Lake City, Utah. He built a sawmill in Bountiful, Utah, in 1848; lived in Centerville, Utah, for about 9 years, where he had a tanning business located in Farmington (near Centerville). He survived the plague of locusts during the time he lived in Centerville in 1854, and saw the seagulls come to eat the locusts and save the crops, afterwards which it became illegal to kill a gull within the state of Utah. In 1859, he moved Sarah's family to Cache Valley, Utah, and then later, Eleanor's family. He built the first grist mill and saw mill in Logan, Cache, Utah, and was in the tanning business, and ran a ferry boat on the Logan River, and later built a bridge there. He was treasurer of Cache county for over 30 years. He was regarded one of the foremost citizens of Logan.
